Abstract
The social determinant of health paradigm emphasizes social, environmental, political and economic conditions as factors that affect health. In other words, health and well-being reflect not only the physical condition but also the social, environmental and economic conditions. This study applied the framework of the social determinants of health to longitudinally examine the social factors that influence those who experience depression for the first time. For this, 12 year data from 3rd to 14th wave of the Korea Welfare Panel Study were used. The data were analyzed using the discrete time hazard model. Main variables included depression, educational background, low-income households, health status, employment type, social capital (trust, reciprocity), social deprivation, and housing deprivation. Results indicated that the lower income, lower education, and the more unstable employment type increased the risk of expeirncing depression for the first time during the analysis period. Housing situation and socioeconomic deprivation also predicted depression. Lower level of social trust and higher level of social reciprocity increased the likelihood of experiencing depression. Study results emphasize the need to recognize the importance of social factors, and speaks to the need for advocacy, political will, and policy intervention for prevention and intervention of depression.
